You really shouldn’t renovate to sell. This is odd advice from a Realtor who specializes in renovating to sell, but renovating to sell is tricky. You must partner with someone who knows what they’re doing.
Not every Realtor can advise you properly. Not every contractor can advise you properly.
If you have a house that’s outdated, there are a few steps you can take to get the best advice on your property and find the best professionals.
- Look for houses that are obviously being “flipped” in your neighborhood. Ask to meet with the contractor running the project. See if he/she will walk your property and give you advice.
- Look for Realtors who represent “flip” properties. Have them walk your house to see what they would recommend.
- Meet with Realtors who specifically sell your neighborhood and have them advise on what they see selling in your neighborhood.
In the process of meeting with enough professionals who can speak directly to the location and condition of your property, you should be able to vet a Realtor who can help you get the most for your money.
There are a few rules to renovating when selling to remember. Read about those here.
